Mitchell matches the profile of pitchers the Sox have drafted lately: a big, hard thrower. He has a fastball that sat around 90, but Jim Callis mentioned he has thrown 97 in front of scouts in shorter sessions. He has a plus curveball and sounds like a future reliever type. Control has been his bugaboo. As a sophomore at TCU Mitchell had a 3.74 ERA with 101 K and 46 BB in 77 IP as a starter. The following spring Mitchell made 10 starts and 10 relief appearances and turned in a 3.49 ERA with 57 K and 33 BB in 49 IP. The Sox used him as a starter in his first appearances with Great Falls as a rookie, which is typically how relief prospects are initially used in the minors. His first full-season assignment showed just how talented and raw he is – in 31 games (mostly in relief) he struck out 11.4 batters per nine, but also walked more than a batter an inning. This and the 23 wild pitches that year tell us he’s got a lot of refinement to do before he can make a case for the majors. As of July in 2015, Mitchell has yet to pitch, for reasons not yet clear.
