Sox Select OF Trayce Thompson in 2nd Round
By Dan Santaromita
With the 61st overall pick the White Sox grabbed high school outfielder Trayce Thompson.
Thompson is a 6’4” 200 pound righty is from Rancho Santa Margarita, California (LA area) and has committed to UCLA. He also played basketball until this year and was on a state championship winning team as a junior. Trayce is considered a great athlete and according to the Sporting News “rates plus tools nearly all across the board with a clearly projectable frame that has room for additional muscle.”
Thompson is the son of former NBA player and current Lakers radio color commentator Mychal. Both of his older brothers are playing D-1 basketball (at Pepperdine and Washington State).
Trayce received an invite to the USA Junior National Team and the scouting reports say he has plus speed and power potential. He might not be the easiest sign, but if the Sox took him this high, they probably believe it won’t be a major problem. Thompson is another high upside draft pick, which seems to be a new trend for the Sox.
