Hudson to AA, Allen to AAA Headline Promotions
By Dan Santaromita
Dan Hudson received his second promotion of the season, Brandon Allen is the latest Baron to get promoted and a slew of other moves throughout the organization took place today.
Allen, a top prospect within the organization was hitting .290 with 7 HR and an .825 OPS with the Barons. Allen is the fourth member of the studly Barons’ squad to earn a promotion, following Gordon Beckham, Aaron Poreda and more recently, Brian Omogrosso. He doesn’t appear to have an opening anytime soon on the Major League roster, but after spending some time with the Barons last year the Sox must have felt it was time to push Allen a little more.
For Hudson, it took just 12 starts in A ball before the Sox felt he was ready for the jump to AA. He was moved up from Kannapolis after four dominating starts. With the Intimidators, Hudson struck out 30 and walked only 2 in 22 innings. He had a 1.23 ERA. In his eight starts with the Dash, the right-hander struck out 49 and walked 13 in 45 innings with a 3.40 ERA. In each of his last three starts, the 22-year-old went 7 innings, allowed 2 or fewer runs, struck out 8 and walked only 1. That’s an eerie amount of consistency. Hudson will likely take the spot of Brian Omogrosso, who was promoted to Charlotte yesterday, in the Barons’ rotation.
DH Lee Cruz and OF/1B Christian Marrero will join Hudson as newly promoted Barons. Marrero, who turns 23 in late July, was hitting .314 with 7 HR and a .839 OPS for Winston-Salem. He was drafted in the 22nd round in 2005 and was a draft and follow signing that made his professional debut at Great Falls in 2006. Throughout his professional career, Marrero has had a very good walk rate (120 in 947 AB before this season), but had only 11 in 226 AB with the Dash. It’s certainly odd, but not necessarily a major concern yet.
Cruz, 26, has become more of an organizational player for the White Sox. He was hitting .263 with 3 HR and a .746 OPS for the Dash. He played for the Barons part of last season. The trio rejoin Charles Shirek, who is only two starts into his Barons’ career following his promotion from the Dash.
As part of the transactions, Jordan Danks was placed on the 7-day DL. He was hit by a pitch June 14 and hasn’t played since. He has been seen wearing a velcro brace on his right wrist.
Replacing the promoted players in Winston-Salem are DH Seth Loman, LHP Justin Edwards and OF Tyler Kuhn. Kuhn was drafted in the 15th round just a year ago and has been impressive at the plate at both of his minor league stops. He was a key part to Great Falls’ Pioneer League title last season and continued to produce for the I’s this year. He hit .299 with a .353 on-base percentage.
Edwards is an interesting case because he was drafted somewhat highly out of high school in 2006 (3rd round), but struggled his first two years in pro ball. After missing all of 2008 and April of this year, Edwards is finally having a strong season. In eight starts, Edwards had a 3.80 ERA for the I’s. In 45 innings he struck out 30 and walked 7. It’s hard to think of Edwards as much of a prospect, even now, because of the injury past and a pedestrian high 80s fastball. His secondary stuff will have to carry him.
Loman is another organizational player. He was signed as a free agent this season and has already played for the Dash.
The Kannapolis roster has some openings as a result of the three players moving up, which could be filled with recently drafted players.
