A Trade, A Retirement & A Promotion

By John Norris

Brian Myrow was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates, the 1B/DH had been on Charlotte’s DL. Mike Grace retired, he had been the third catcher for Winston-Salem. And, utility player Luis Sierra was promoted to Winston-Salem from Kannapolis to take Grace’s spot. This leaves one open roster spot in Winston-Salem and two in Kannapolis.

  1. I wonder who we will see fill those spots. Maybe some of our top selections end up skipping Rookie Ball or maybe a few guys in Rookie ball jump up to Kanny when some more of our selections sign? I could make a major case for starting Phegley in Kanny. The guy can hit so no harm in having him at the more advanced level while letting Dubler (a top 10 round pick from last year) handle the catching duties down in the minors.

  2. I’d almost expect Phegley to start in Kannapolis, I don’t see much point in holding an advanced college hitter like him back in rookie ball. I certainly hope that’s the way they go with him anyway. I’d like to see Justin Greene get bumped up to Winston-Salem also.

  3. I think Phegley and Mitchell will for sure report to Kanny. Also, as Seven said, when Mitchell reports to Kanny, we’ll likely see Justin Greene go to W-S.

Greene has been putting up great stats this year, and from what I’ve read, plays really good D in CF and is a really hard,100% effort type of player.

  4. I saw Greene a bit in some minor league action down in Glendale and he’s a very short kid. I didn’t pay much attention to him but he definately doesn’t project much as a power guy. Good speed and relatively strong for a small guy. Can’t say I watched a couple at bats and went “wow” but very few guys have that ability. He is deserving of a promotion and might have the skill-set to be a utility guy. I’d think he’d have a better future in the NL though.
