Brooks, Santos Promoted

By John Norris

Ricky Brooks has been promoted to Birmingham from Winston-Salem, where he’ll take the place of the injured Ryan Rote (Placed on the DL). The promotion still leaves the Barons without a left handed pitcher.

Brooks spot in Winston Salem was filled by converted infielder turned pitcher Sergio Santos. Santos joined the organization as Non-Roster Invitee MI this spring, but was eventually traded to the Giants. We are unsure how he returned to the Sox, but he had spent April and May in extended spring training where he was working on his conversion to the mound. Santos was a 1st round selection of the Dbacks in 2002 and posted a 7.36 ERA in 8 games for the Intidimidators prior to his promotion.

The moves leaves 3 open roster spots in Kannapolis and 1 in Winston-Salem. Expect to see Josh Phegley fill one of the roster spots in Kannapolis. The Intimidators also need a pitcher and a middle infielder and we should see some more roster moves in the next 24 hours.

CWS Star:
Jared Mitchell just upped his price after his performance in the CWS. I believe his performance will increase his asking price and ultimately make him a tougher sign, so it’s difficult to speculate on his eventual destination.

Cheers,
JPN

  1. Ricky Books was easily one of the most dissapointing selections the Sox have had. I remember that being one of the first years I really followed the draft and some publications were talking about what a horrific over-draft he was while others said he was a late riser and that his 2-seamer reminded them of Mariano Rivera. Hopefully he can help out the Barons though.

Santos is quite the story. One of the half million or show 1st round prep shortstops who bellied up (Its got to be one of the positions with the highest failure rate in the draft) but he’s supposed to have a good arm. His numbers weren’t any good in Kanny though. I for one hope he finds a way to make it as a pitcher.

  2. JPN, any idea what is wrong with Rote? He still throw pretty hard?

  3. Yeah, the last time I saw him pitch, he couldn’t throw strikes. I think maybe it’s a head clearer DL stint.

  4. Its so funny how common those tend to be in the minors. Makes a lot of sense too and its probably perfect. Gets 7 days off to work a few mound sessions and hopefully improve his mechanics. Rote clearly isn’t a major league prospect anymore but if he gets back on track he might be able to at least help the Barons out down the stretch.

  5. By the way John, I’ve been throwing images in your stories but if there is ever a particular image you want for your stories or something let me know and I can probably get something set-up.

  6. I would have put images in, but I wasn’t sure how to do it.
