Scouting report
Flowers has a plus bat for a catcher, but the question is whether or not he can stick at the position. The Sox and Flowers keep saying there are no plans to move him, but that doesn’t mean they won’t some point in his Major League career. Flowers’ bat has the potential to overcome being a below average defensive catcher, but some scouts and experts think his future is as a first baseman or DH. Flowers has huge power and a great on-base ability. He loads up on his swing creating a lot of swing and misses, but a low contact rate isn’t a major problem considering his other skills as a hitter. The big questions surround his defense behind the plate. He is still somewhat raw as a catcher. His catch and throw ability is a work in progress. He will need to improve his footwork when he pops up to throw, but his arm seems passable otherwise. He seems to work well with the pitching staffs and his blocking ability is decent enough. He is still a work in progress defensively, but it’s not unreasonable to think he stays at the position.
Major League Outlook: Poor man’s Jim Thome at who knows what position (if any)
