Scouting report
The thing scouts seem to love most about Phegley is his makeup and work ethic. It is what put him above several other top catchers in the ‘09 draft. His college production was spectacular and that should continue in the minors. His level swing results in a lot of line drives, but is part of the reason why scouts haven’t projected him to have much power. There are also minor concerns about his bat speed. Behind the plate he projects to be an average defender. He has a good, but not great arm and problems with his footwork. Phegley has also been questioned in regards to his ability to block balls in the dirt. Reports about his defense were better earlier in his college career. It seems like he has regressed a bit, but it is possibly a matter of when scouts saw him. His defense has been described as inconsistent, but through all the complaints no one seems to think he will need to move away from the position in the future. Phegley should get through the system quickly with 2012 being an optimistic, but not unrealistic arrival time on the South Side if the Sox are willing to make him a backup or if Tyler Flowers doesn’t work out at catcher.
Major League Outlook: Average starting catcher
