Scouting report
Retherford has turned into quite a coup for the Sox. After getting blocked for playing time in two years at Arizona State, Retherford didn’t get drafted and the Sox seem to have found a diamond in the rough. His upside is probably that of a utility infielder, but considering he mashes left-handed hitting he could become a useful one. If you watch Sox games on TV, you’ll hear Hawk Harrelson rave about him and Phil Rogers has said positive things about him as well. His bat isn’t the issue. He makes a lot of contact and has decent power, but he doesn’t walk enough or have enough speed to be a #2 hitter in any lineup. Defensively, he’s decent at second, but doesn’t have the range to play shortstop as a utility guy. He could play third, but his bat might not stick there as a regular. A reasonable comparison is Jayson Nix (utility guy that can hit LHP) with a little more contact, but with less defensive ability.

Major League Outlook: Utility infielder
ETA: 2011
