Scouting report
Shelby is a very good athlete with that power and speed combination that people love so much. His contact and walk rates are a concern, but he has big enough upside to make up for it. He is strong for his size and has the ability to hit 20-25 HR in the Majors if he can maximize his tools. Shelby can be a plus baserunner if he continues to improve. He has plus speed and has improved his baserunning so Shelby has the ability to be an above average stolen base threat in the Majors. After playing second base in college, he was converted to the outfield in 2007 and has handled centerfield capably. He has an average arm and the speed to play a solid centerfield, but still needs to improve. Jordan Danks has forced him to the corners with the Barons, which may slow his centerfield development a bit. Right now, there is still a lot of projection with Shelby, but he has MLB caliber talent. It’s looking less likely that he reaches his potential after a slow start to 2009, but a player with his skill set will get multiple chances to make it.
Major League Outlook: Bottom of the order OF/above average utility player
