Scouting report
Shirek has been on the prospect radar since impressing in the wood-bat Northwoods League that is one of the best summer leagues for college players. After a good season as a freshman at Nebraska, he posted an ERA north of 6 his sophomore season and despite being draft eligible was considered a tough sign because he was coming off a poor season and still had two years of eligibility left. As a result of his fallen stock and signability issues, Shirek fell to the 23rd round to the Sox and they were able to sign him. He has shown good control as a pro and has moved through the system quickly, reaching AA in his second full season. Shirek features a good sinker that is typically in the 91-93 range, but has flashed mid 90s. He also has a solid slider and throws a curveball and changeup. It’s hard not to like a guy that can throw four pitches for strikes like Shirek, but his secondary stuff will need to improve and his mediocre (at best) strikeout rate is a concern as he continues to move up the system.

Major League Outlook: #4 starter, but he needs to miss more bats to get to the bigs.
ETA: Mid-to-late 2011
