Scouting report
Sauer, similar to fellow former Sun Devil C.J. Retherford, received less of the limelight at Arizona State because he was behind 2009 first rounder Mike Leake and others on an extremely talented team. Sauer spent two years at junior college and then was used mostly as a reliever for ASU. He was a reliever in his pro debut in 2008 for Great Falls and started as a reliever and spot starter for Kannapolis in 2009 before shifting into the rotation full time. He throws a sinker in the 90-92 range with a good curve and a slider. He locates all of his pitches well and gets a lot of ground balls with his sinker. He is similar to Jack Egbert in the fact that both are sinkerballers with decent strikeout rates, spectacular control. Egbert also was a spot starter in Kannapolis before gradually becoming a full time starter like Sauer. Sauer likely will never be an above average prospect, but could make it as a 5th starter or swingman in the Majors.
Major League Outlook: #5 starter/long reliever
