One of the first bits of news to come out of Glendale on the first day of Spring Training was the release of Freddie Bynum.

Mark Gonzales twittered this morning that Bynum would be looking to pursue opportunities in Japan. With versatility an important aspect of the 2010 White Sox, there’s a chance that Bynum could have seen a shot if Omar Vizquel and Jayson Nix were to get hurt or underperform.

Bynum, 29, is a .259 career hitter in the majors.

In an interview with MILB.com’s Jonathan Mayo today before the Futures Game, it was revealed that Sox catching prospect Tyler Flowers will begin play after the break for Triple-A Charlotte.

Flowers, 23, is one of the top prospects in the Sox system, and is expected to be a top 5 prospect in the FutureSox midseason prospect rankings. The 6-4 catcher was hitting .302 with 13 home runs and 43 RBI. Flowers even hit well at spacious Regions Park, site of seven of his home runs.

In today’s Futures Game, Flowers singled up the middle in his first at bat, and struck out swinging in his second. He was the starting catcher for the USA squad.

Flowers’ promotion to Triple-A would lead one to think that he more than likely won’t be trade bait this summer – rather, he will continue to be groomed as the heir apparent to AJ Pierzynski in Chicago. While it is doubtful he makes an appearance in Chicago this year, it seems quite likely that at some point in 2010, Flowers will be playing for the White Sox.

Eighth round pick Ryan Buch out of Monmouth University is as interesting as any Sox pick after the first day. The 6-3 junior from tiny Monmouth College, ranked 90th in the country by Baseball America, fell into the Sox laps into the 8th round.

The righty, who went 7-5 with a 4.31 ERA in 2009 for Monmouth, is expected to sign in rather quick order.

Buch was regarded as one of the better college arms in the draft, and it was thought he could go as high as the second round, but for whatever reason he dropped and the Sox were the beneficiary.

Buch can ultimately profile as a middle of the rotation starter. He features two solid pitches, including a low 90s fastball, a power curve and a straight change. His fastball has been gaining velocity this last year, and has been able to touch the mid 90s. His curve is MLB-caliber, but his location is often spotty. His delivery is very much over the top, and his mechanics are thought to contribute to his command issues.

Ultimately, Buch’s success will depend on his command issues getting straightened out. If he can do that, he should be a guy that can reach the majors, as both his fastball and curveball are regarded highly – when he can find the strike zone.

As soon as Buch signs, as is likely, he will probably head to Great Falls.

Justin Collop, the sixth round pick of the Sox from Toledo, sounds like a guy ready to sign.

“I expected to go somewhere in the first 10 rounds. I’m ready. I’ve had a couple of weeks off. I’m good to go,” is what he told the Observer Newspaper, and Collop, fresh off of his junior season, is more than ready to sign. So what will the Sox be getting in Collop?

His numbers this past season were less than impressive. In 76 innings, he compiled a 4-7 record with a 6.51 ERA with 19 walks and 63 strikeouts. What has intrigued scouts the most, though, was his projectability, as well as a bevy of pitches that Collop throws, including a two seam fastball that sits around 90, a slider, a changeup, and a split finger pitch that he has been relying on more to get outs. His low walk totals as well as his willingness to pitch inside are also a couple of things that made him one of the most dependable starters in the MAC.

Collop has an easy, repeatable delivery and appears to field his position well. He figures to start in Great Falls or Bristol, and should sign quickly.

With the 71st pick overall in the MLB Draft, the Chicago White Sox took left handed starting pitcher David Holmberg from Port Charlotte High School in Port Charlotte, Florida.

Holmberg is one of the more polished high school pitchers available and is committed to the Florida Gators. He’s a big lefty with a high-80s fastball, as well as a curve and a changeup.

Holmberg may not be as high-ceiling as some of the previous Sox picks, but he looks to be a quick mover nonetheless, with scouts raving about his poise and polish on the mound. Both his fastball and curve are potential plus pitches, with the changeup coming along, and the ability to locate all three. He also can make batters miss both in and out of the strikezone.

The 6-4, 220 lefty will likely land in either Bristol or Great Falls to begin his pro career, but could potentially be in Kannapolis by next year.

With the sixth pick in the Compensation A round, 38th overall, the Chicago White Sox selected Josh Phegley, a catcher out of Indiana University. The 21 year old junior catcher becomes the second Hoosier taken in this year’s draft and he joins Jared Mitchell as one of the top Sox picks.

Phegley was successful in the Cape Cod League and has capitalized on his performance in Big Ten play as well. He hit .344 with 17 home runs and 66 RBI for the Hoosiers.

Phegley shows above average power to go along with good plate discipline. Phegley is a skilled hitter, but most questions for him have revolved around his ability to stick as a catcher. His defense is questionable, as well as his arm, and he may not stick at the position. However, his bat will keep him there as long as possible.

The Chicago White Sox have called up top pitching prospect Aaron Poreda to Chicago from Double-A Birmingham. No corresponding move has been announced.

Poreda could be coming to the majors for a variety of reasons, but he could either replace Clayton Richard or Bartolo Colon in the rotation, with fellow starting pitcher Jose Contreras doing the same – or he could be sliding into long relief. The White Sox have not yet announced the move, so no one has been moved off the 25-man roster yet.

Poreda, 22, was the top pitching prospect in the Sox system according to FutureSox. The 6-6 lefty has been impressive in Birmingham, going 5-4 with a 2.38 ERA. He’s struck out 69 in 64.1 innings, but has also walked 35 in that same time span. Southern League batters are hitting just .206 against Poreda.

The burly lefty features high 90s gas, but has been working in the minor leagues to refine his breaking pitches.

To make room on the 25-man roster for starting pitcher Jose Contreras, the White Sox optioned pitcher Wes Whisler back to Triple-A Charlotte this afternoon. They also announced the signing of starting pitcher Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract.

Whisler, 26, gave up 2 runs in 1.1 IP at the major league level in limited action. He was 5-3 with a 2.81 ERA for Charlotte before his promotion, and he could either start or continue to work in relief for Charlotte.

Garcia, a member of the 2005 World Series team, will be looked at to provide starting depth after being cut early this spring by the Mets. He spent the end of last season with the Detroit Tigers, pitching in the makeup game at the end of the season. No timetable has been set for his return to the mound.
