Curbelo jumped straight to #7 on FutureSox’s rankings after getting drafted, which says a lot about the big shortstop after being selected in the 6th round. Curbelo was MLB’s 104th ranked prospect entering the draft and seen as a tough sign as he was a commit to the University of Miami, but the Sox inked him for a whopping $700,000, more than $413,000 above his slot value of $286,700. In his pro debut in the AZL, he played a mix of both middle infield positions and posted a .226/.303/.326 line as an 18-year-old. 2017 didn’t go well – after three games with Great Falls (in which he’d already collected 6 hits), he was sidelined with a knee injury and ended up having surgery for a meniscus tear. 2018 has Luis back healthy, and after some time in Extended Spring Training went to Kannapolis. There as a young-for-level 20-year-old he struggled at the plate (.237/.282/.338) while playing mostly shortstop with some third base mixed in.
The prep draftee has already shown some encouraging things despite the numbers not being impressive yet. His power, which scouts think he hasn’t quite tapped into yet as he still fills out his larger frame, shows in BP and occasionally in games. Scouts have been most impressed with Curbelo’s bat speed, which was well above average in his early pro looks. Scouts are expecting him to move to third as his frame matures, where his soft hands, quick first step and powerful throwing arm will come into play better than at shortstop. Curbelo is definitely going to be a project, but could be one that pays off if everything goes well for the Sox. While he was playing young for the SAL in 2018, he does need to start to produce on the tools in 2019 to stay on the radar.
Major League Outlook: Power hitting, good defensive third baseman.
