- #23 – 2016 Preseason
One of the higher profile international signings the club made in the early Marco Paddy years ($450,000 in 2013), Feliz tore up the DSL as a 17-year-old. DSL stats usually are taken with a grain of salt, but even then a .349/.455/.446 line with a substantial walk rate and decent contact rate are impressive at that age. It is even more impressive when you remember that Feliz was more well known for his defense than his hitting when he signed. Feliz struggled when he was promoted to the AZL White Sox at the end of the 2015 season during their league championship run (10 K in 9 G, .161 AVG), though that was only 9 games. He repeated AZL for his age 18 season, and the core numbers weren’t great (he hit .214) but he did still continue to draw walks and make OK contact. He played 3B exclusively. But in 2017, he repeated AZL again and was relegated to a part-time role, posting an .869 OPS but in just 18 games spread evenly through the season.
Clearly, patience will be key for the 18-year-old as he is in his first full season stateside. According to Baseball America, scouts saw him at signing time as a line drive hitter “with average bat speed and a chance to be an above average defender”. Feliz’ frame has filled out significantly as he goes into his age 20 season. Defense will be where Feliz hangs his hat while his hitting develops, but 2016 reports weren’t very positive on that note and got in half his appearances at DH in 2017. In-person looks in his 2nd AZL trip saw a hitter raw in plan and getting caught between at the plate, but that’s not unexpected at his age. Feliz may be dropping off the radar, but it’s hard to say for sure at this age.
Major League Outlook: Defense-oriented third baseman
