Scouting report
Every team signs a handful of undrafted players every year, sometimes out of independent leagues, and the great majority of them are just minor league filler. But occasionally teams find something a bit more, and at this point Mike Recchia looks the part of that rare find. After stints in the Yankees and Orioles organizations and a little over a season with Windy City of the Frontier League, the Sox signed Recchia in 2013. He was nails in Kannapolis (1.45 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, 53/7 K/BB in 49.2 IP) and made a brief appearance in Winston-Salem. In 2014 he was strong across A+ (7 starts) and AA (19 starts), sporting some of the best overall numbers for a starter in the system: 3.05 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 8.2 K/9, 2.7 BB/9 in 147.2 IP combined. In terms of stuff, Recchia’s primary fastball runs 91-94 with some late run, an above average (per a scout) slider (runs 82-85), a 12-5 curve that gets some swing-and-miss, and a change. He has excellent control, especially considering his intense mound presence and relatively high-effort delivery. This Crestwood native and lifelong White Sox fan grew up selling hot dogs at Comiskey Park. Look for Recchia to be in Charlotte in 2015, and he could be in Chicago that year or the next if he can handle the more sophisticated hitters in AAA.
